love your city

sometimes when i come across a word that only exists in one language, my script gets flipped so hard that it makes me reassess my own grasp on vocabulary. it is the untranslatable, the inexplicable, the barely describable. it is portugal’s saudade (nostalgia like you ain’t neva felt), it is france’s intricate vagueness between je t’aime and je t’adore (i love you and, well, i love you), and most recently, it is catalunya’s lletraferit.

pronounced yeh-tra-fah-reet, i discovered it after going to a coffee shop/bookstore here in barcelona bearing that name. my spanish paramour, laia, was able to give me some insight on the meaning:

lletraferit: [1917; de lletra i ferit] adj amant de conrear les lletres.
[1917; from letter and wounded] adj the lover of cultivating letters.

wounded letters, collected, collectively wounding.
